Amazing view of Universe captured

The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) has produced one of its most extraordinary views of the Universe to date.

Called the eXtreme Deep Field, the picture captures a mass of galaxies stretching back almost to the time when the first stars began to shine.

But this was no simple point and snap - some of the objects in this image are too distant and too faint for that.

Rather, this view required Hubble to stare at a tiny patch of sky for more than 500 hours to detect all the light.

The XDF will become an invaluable tool for astronomy. The objects embedded in it will now be followed up by other telescopes. It will keep scientists busy for years, enabling them to study the full history of galaxy formation and evolution.

The new vista is actually an updating of a previous HST product - the Hubble Ultra Deep Field.

That was built from data acquired in 2003 and 2004, and saw the telescope burrow into a small area of space in the Constellation Fornax (The Furnace). Again, it necessitated many repeat observations, and revealed thousands of galaxies, both near and far, making it the deepest image of the cosmos ever taken at that time.

But XDF goes further; it dials down into an even smaller fraction of the UDF.

It incorporates more than 2,000 separate exposures over 10 years using Hubble's two main cameras - the Advanced Camera for Surveys, installed by astronauts in 2002, and the Wide Field Camera 3, which was added to the observatory during its final servicing in 2009.

Beyond the visible

To see what it does, Hubble has to reach beyond the visible into the infrared. It is only at longer wavelengths of light that some of the most distant objects become detectable.

Of the more than 5,000 galaxies in the XDF, one is seen as it existed just 450 million years after the Universe's birth in the Big Bang. Scientists time that event to be 13.7 billion years ago.

This remarkable image will be updated again when Hubble's successor gets into orbit. The James Webb Space Telescope is scheduled to launch in 2018.

This next-generation observatory's larger mirror and more sensitive infrared instruments will allow it to go deeper still, to witness the very first starlight in the Universe.

7 Architectural Styles to Consider for Your New Home | Home ...

Home is where the heart is, so it?s nice to have a home that is at once comfortable and stylish. Like fashion, homes are made up of a whole host of interesting styles suited to various tastes to really bring out a sense of personality. If you?re building a new home from scratch, here are five architectural styles you might consider.

1. Traditional Ranch-Style

This is one of the simplest styles, usually featuring a basic floor plan, efficient living spaces, and an attached garage. Ranch-style homes were first built in the 1920s and became popular in the suburban home-building boom from the 1940s to the 1970s.

Traditional ranch homes are noted for being long and close to the ground. They are often considered cookie-cutter in design thanks to simple interiors and exteriors. However, as plain as these homes might appear, they offer a lot of potential for remodeling and additions. Bi-level and tri-level homes evolved from the traditional ranch home. As minimal as they are, they offer a comfortable, casual, informal living space that can fit any homeowner?s needs.

2. Craftsman

A popular house style that started in the late 19th century and remained popular well into the 1930s, the Craftsman (or Arts and Crafts) home is distinguished by a great deal of interior woodwork that includes built-in shelving and seating. The craftsman home also gave way to breakfast nooks built into kitchens. Exteriors often feature low-pitched roofs with exposed rafters, wide eave overhangs, and decorative braces. Porches are simplified and framed by square columns. Many craftsman homes also feature usable attic space.

With simplicity of form and visible handiwork that uses local, natural materials, it?s easy to see why the craftsman-style bungalow is making such a big comeback.

3. Contemporary

While the term originally referred to homes built between 1950 and 1970, ?contemporary? now describes a wide assortment of homes built in recent decades that focus on geometric lines and simple forms. Contemporary homes reflect the tendency toward experimentation that initially came from the Modern period after World War II.

Contemporary homes feature open floor plans, inventive design elements, and plenty of glass structures, doing away with any elaborate flourishes and unnecessary detail. The complexity of these homes comes from the mix of contrasting materials and textures, flat or low-pitched roofs, and exposed beams.

4. Cape Cod

Named after the area in Massachusetts, Cape-Cod-style homes have roots dating back to 1675. This style gained traction in the 1930s. The Cape Cod home is usually one to one and a half stories tall, featuring wood siding, a steep roofline, hardwood floors, and multi-pane windows. Windows in the dormers add light, ventilation, and space.

Additions to a Cape Cod home can be made at the sides or back. While the upstairs areas are generally limited, you can easily change them to fit your personal needs.

5. Cottage

American architects fashioned cozy cottage-style homes after the medieval homes found on the English countryside. The style was especially popular in the United States in the 1920s and 1930s. The main feature is a warm storybook quality, which gives you the ability to really use your imagination when designing your cottage-style home. Cottages also have arched doors, casement windows, and steep roof pitches. Keeping with the medieval feel, these homes often have stone, stucco, or brick sidings.

6. French Country

In the United States, French country style homes were a mainstay during the 18th century, during which time France occupied much of the eastern portion of North America. While the French style faded after the 1800s, much of the architectural tradition remained in New Orleans and other areas.

French country homes feature soft lines, plenty of curves, and stonework with the interiors presenting plaster or stucco walls, stone floors, and exposed wood beams. The nature of this style is to impart a rustic warmth and comfortable design.

7. Mediterranean

Mediterranean homes, which include the Spanish Colonial Revival style, were a popular architectural style in Southern California during the 1920s ad 1930s and can still be seen through the state today.

Mediterranean homes typically have a U-shaped floor plan centered around a courtyard and fountain. Homes feature arches, grillwork, a low-pitched red tile roof, and adobe or stucco exteriors.

This is the best time to be a writer

I just returned from my trip to the American Christian Fiction Writers conference (ACFW). It was a great opportunity to meet with authors and talk with them about the publishing world. I had the privilege of presenting a seminar on retail, and the state of publishing, especially as it concerns authors. For many authors, the business side of publishing is hidden behind the curtain. And yet, the author is critical to a publisher?s success, not only getting the book into the retail channel, but through the retail channel to the end consumer.

The keynote speaker for this year?s conference was Michael Hyatt. Michael is the former CEO and Chairman of the Board at Thomas Nelson. He has spent the last year and a half writing and speaking full time, although he is still very engaged with authors and the publishing community.

Michael shared these encouraging words in the first session, and I thought they would be helpful to share with all of the authors that I work with on a weekly basis.

Michael Hyatt?s five reasons why ?today is the best time to be a writer.?

  1. It is easier than ever to do the writing. The tools have never been easier to access, from conferences and books about writing to specific software for writers and other technology.
  2. It is easier than ever to do market research. Google made it possible. Facebook and twitter have made it personal. Authors can research their characters and scenes with a few key strokes. Understanding the target audience for a book has never been easier with tools on the internet. ?Group-think? is facilitated by creative groups engaging each other through social media and writing circles. Authors can engage readers directly like never before. Authors have the tools to figure out what their platform is, and to build a tribe around it.
  3. It is easier than ever to get into print. Traditional publishing is no longer the only option. Self publishing is viable. It is not necessarily the best option for everyone, but it can be a great option for some. Traditional publishing is far from dead, and if traditional publishers learn to ?lean into the changes? being brought by the self publishing phenomenon, it can be an exciting place to be. Traditional publishers need to ask: What do these tools and this model make possible? What are the new opportunities? How can I find new readers in more places?
  4. It is easier than ever to build a tribe. Authors can engage their fans directly. There are new tools like the recently launched bookshout.com site, where authors can interact real-time with readers inside of their own book. Another new site called bookjolt.com, allows readers to read whole books for free online, and interact with authors. These are part of a new concept called social reading, and literally, an author?s book becomes a platform.
  5. It is easier than ever to build a business around your content. After all, it is great to write for writing sake, but most authors would like to earn some income from their writing too. Websites and blogs help you build your platform, engage readers, offer free content, and sell books. A small book business can be a sustainable business.

Michael also echoed something that I share with authors all the time. Authors have never been in a stronger position to make things happen than they are now. Authors can go after traditional publishing, or they can do it themselves. All of the tools are available for them to compete, in almost all cases, with everyone else.

This new model is a far cry from the stigma that used to be attached with what people called vanity publishing. In fact, a recent article in the Huffington Post, makes an interesting point that what we call ?traditional publishing?, might be in fact, the new ?vanity publishing.?

All of this change and opportunity is encouraging news for the content industry.

If you are an author, do you agree, or disagree with these thoughts? Let us hear it!

Iran readies domestic Internet, blocks Google

9 hrs.

DUBAI ??Iran plans to switch its citizens onto a domestic Internet network in what officials say is a bid to improve cyber security but which many Iranians fear is the latest way to control their access to the web.

The announcement, made by a government deputy minister on Sunday, came as state television announced Google Inc's search engine and its email service would be blocked "within a few hours".

"Google and Gmail will be filtered throughout the country until further notice," an official identified only by his last name, Khoramabadi, said, without giving further details.

The Iranian Students' News Agency (ISNA) said Google ban was connected to the anti-Islamic film posted on the company's YouTube site which has caused outrage throughout the Muslim world. There was no official confirmation.

Iran has one of the biggest Internet filters of any country in the world, preventing normal Iranians from accessing countless sites on the official grounds they are offensive or criminal.

But many Iranians believe the block on sites such as Facebook and YouTube is due to their use in anti-government protests after the disputed re-election of President Mahmoud Ahamdinejad in 2009.

Sites expressing views considered anti-government are also routinely blocked.

Iranians commonly overcome the government filter by using virtual private network (VPN) software that makes the computer appear as if it is based in another country.

But officials have long spoken of creating an Iranian Internet system which would be largely isolated from the World Wide Web.

"In recent days, all governmental agencies and offices ... have been connected to the national information network," deputy communications and technology minister Ali Hakim-Javadi was quoted as saying by the Mehr news agency.

The second phase of the plan would be to connect ordinary Iranians to the national network, he said.

According to Iranian media, the domestic system would be fully implemented by March 2013 but it was not clear whether access to the global Internet would be cut once the Iranian system is rolled out.

Even using VPNs, many Iranians suffered serious problems accessing email and social networking sites in February, ahead of parliamentary elections.

The Islamic Republic tightened cyber security after its nuclear program was attacked in 2010 by the Stuxnet computer worm, which caused centrifuges to fail at its main uranium enrichment facility.

Tehran, whose nuclear programme is suspected by the West of being aimed at developing a bomb, accused the United States and Israel of deploying the worm.

Authorities said in April a computer virus was detected inside the control systems of Kharg Island - which handles the vast majority of Iran's crude oil exports - but the terminal remained operational.

Communications and Technology Minister Reza Taqipour said last month Iran needed to develop its own network to ensure the safety of the country's information.

"Control over the Internet should not be in the hands of one or two countries," he said. "Especially on major issues and during crises, one cannot trust this network at all."

Iran threatened in May to take legal action against Google over its decision to drop the term "Persian Gulf" from its Google Maps and leaving the waterway between Iran and the Arabian peninsula nameless.

Many Arab states refer to the sea as the "Arabian Gulf", a term Iran considers unacceptable.

Better Metrics of Green Benefits Needed ... - Business Review Europe

NEW YORK, Sept.?24, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --?McGraw-Hill Construction, part of The McGraw-Hill Companies (NYSE: MHP), today released its latest SmartMarket Executive Brief: Determining the Value of Green Building Investments: A Perspective From Industry Leaders on Triple Bottom Line Decision Making, in partnership with URS, at the White House's 2012 GreenGov Symposium. The report provides the findings of qualitative research conducted by McGraw-Hill Construction through interviews with sustainability leaders in the education, healthcare, retail, manufacturing and federal government sectors on their perspectives about decision making for green building investments.

The report reveals that in order for green building to continue to gain market share at a comparable rate to the past decade, more far-reaching benefits need to be documented and demonstrated to organizational leadership for them to increase their level of green investments. These include benefits across the spectrum of financial, environmental and social benefits?often referred to as the "triple bottom line."

"To date, owners have acted on compelling benefits from their green investments, mainly savings in energy, water, waste and lowered operating costs," said Harvey Bernstein, Vice President of Industry Insights and Alliances at McGraw-Hill Construction. "However, these are only a fraction of the advantages offered by green buildings?missing is a quantification of the full triple bottom line benefits from these investments, especially around the social benefits to human performance and well-being."

The study includes recommendations on actions needed in the industry in order to accelerate green investments across the built environment:

  • Evaluate social, environmental and financial goals together when making decisions on green building investments;
  • Create green building benchmarks through standardization and disclosure of operational building costs;
  • Compile data and case studies that establish the value of nonfinancial benefits of green building;
  • Create better tools using a more thorough, industry-consensus definition of lifecycle costing based on impacts across the triple bottom line;
  • Assemble a?public database of green project measures across the triple bottom line.

"The data confirm that sustainability is vital to business growth, for us and for our clients. The demand for business to demonstrate its ability to create value for all its stakeholders is paramount," said Lidia Berger, Vice President, Sustainable Practice Director ? Facilities at URS. "URS understands how to design, implement and measure the value of sustainable investment. Most importantly, we can provide our clients with a measurable return on investment based on projects' economic, social, and environmental impacts."

Through in-depth interviews with sustainability leaders, the report finds that organizations are using lifecycle cost analysis of operational savings to demonstrate the ROI of green and to justify green building projects. However, most respondents report there is a need for more data about the non-financial benefits of green to encourage their organizations to increase their investment in green building. This report also reveals the need for standardized measures that can fully capture the impact of green building across the triple bottom line.

The results of the study will be presented today at 3:15 p.m. as part of the Economic Valuation session at the White House's 2012 GreenGov Symposium in Washington, DC.

Bipolar woman sues King Soopers, claims she was fired for disorder ...

Kings Soopers

DENVER ? A woman who worked for King Soopers over a period of five years is now suing the Denver-based grocery?chain, alleging she was fired due to her bipolar condition.

Kelly Ferris was hired as a receptionist at the grocery store?s headquarters in 2003, and worked for five years before she said she took a medical leave to deal with a flare-up in her bipolar condition.?

She said that she had an expectation she would be able to utilize the company?s 18-month medical leave policy, but said she was fired after five months of leave for failing to report to work without permission.

The?U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) is suing King Soopers on Ferris? behalf, saying the grocery store?s actions violated the Americans with Disabilities Act.

?Bipolar disorder and other psychiatric conditions have long been misunderstood in society,? EEOC Phoenix Regional Attorney Mary Jo O?Neill wrote in a news release. ?Employees who have bipolar disorder are frequently subject to unfair stereotypes about their ability to work. That?s why the EEOC filed this lawsuit.?

The suit is not King Soopers first run-in with the EEOC. In December 2011, the grocery store agreed to pay $80,000 when a court found it had discriminated against a mentally challenged worker, who was allegedly taunted and bullied by co-workers and eventually fired.

Match Making For Boomers: "All You Need Is Love", But When ...

You have probably heard of (or known; or read stories and seen movies about) women who "fall in love" with their college professors or older, married men. They feel as if they are "the most important person" in this man's life; they believe he will divorce his wife for them. They believe the man when he says that in all the years he has been teaching he has never met someone like her. These men's prestige and power make them so attractive - the women hardly believe that such men can "fall" for them... and she believe "her man" when he takes her to hotel rooms and makes love to her.

What follows is a well-known story: they put plans on hold because they prefer to wait for his phone call, hoping to see him again as soon as possible. And they accept whatever reasons he uses to justify not calling.

And they feel heart-broken when suddenly, out of the blue, he stops calling altogether.

(A comment: There are many men who are also needy and dependent, "traits" and behaviors which damage their relationships as well).

The Desperate Need to be Loved

It is amazing to see how often many "fall for" someone who is unavailable. And when they do, they give themselves totally, as if there is no tomorrow. It is also amazing to see how often they ignore warning signs - even the most obvious ones (such as: he is flirting with others... ) - believing their lover when he says that they are the most important in his life.

The question is, are they so desperate to be loved? Are they lack self-esteem and therefore "fall" for someone in a high position, as if to tell themselves they are worth something? Have they been deprived of love at their parents' home and therefore are so needy to receive it, at all cost?

Regardless of the reasons driving people to be desperate for love, as long as they don't become aware of what drives their need, they might not be able to de-activate the power it exerts over them. Consequently they might behave in desperate ways time and again, with one partner after another, hindering their ability to eventually build and maintain a healthy and satisfying intimacy.

Some eventually become so disillusioned with the concept of "love" that they abolish altogether their attempts to have a partner. Others continue, unsuccessfully, to find a partner who will give them the love they so much lust for - only to become disillusioned once again.

How can they heal?

The most efficient way for them to heal is by understanding how they hurt themselves over and over again:

* By gaining insight into the fears and needs which drive them to "fall in love";
* By taking steps to counteract their "falling in love", to conquer their neediness;
* By realizing what does a "healthy relationship" mean to them;
* And finally, by taking the steps to heal and change their attitudes and behaviors.

How can they do so? By developing their Self-Awareness: looking inwards and becoming aware of what it is that drives them to sabotage themselves (be it fears, needs, dependency issues and other factors), and understanding how to re-take control over their life.

There is the saying "No one has promised you a rose garden". But awareness can help you remove thorns from your life and move forward to a healthy and satisfying intimacy.

Chicago mayor seeks court order to end teachers' strike as second week begins

CHICAGO - Chicago's mayor turned to the courts Monday to try to end a teachers' strike in the nation's third-largest school district that entered its second week.

The strike has been uncomfortable for the Obama administration with the presidential election approaching, as Mayor Rahm Emmanuel is a former chief of staff to President Barack Obama and Democratic presidential candidates like Obama traditionally get union support.

The strike is the first for the city's teachers in 25 years and has kept 350,000 students out of class.

Emanuel asked a state court Monday to force Chicago school teachers back to work. Emanuel spokeswoman Sarah Hamilton said city attorneys asked the circuit court to force Chicago Teachers Union members off the picket line and back into classrooms.

The union and school leaders had seemed headed toward a resolution at the end of last week, but teachers decided Sunday to remain on strike, saying they needed more time to review a complicated proposal.

Central to the debate are two issues that have national concern: teacher evaluations and job security.

Emanuel said the strike was illegal because it endangers the health and safety of students and concerned issues ? evaluations and layoffs ? that state law says cannot be grounds for a work stoppage.

With an average salary of $76,000, Chicago teachers are among the highest-paid in the nation, and the contract outline calls for annual raises. But some teachers are upset it did not restore a 4 per cent raise Emanuel rescinded last year.

Pakistan Press Freedom: Journalists' Choice: Face Death Or Jail

QUETTA, Pakistan -- The telephone call to local journalists generally comes in the late evening. The voice on the other end is harsh. He has a statement he wants printed, and he prefaces it with a terse order: "Report our messages without making any changes or we will kill you."

The messages they deliver warn of upcoming violence or assassinations, sometimes naming an intended victim, or claim responsibility for atrocities already committed. The calls come from Sunni militants notorious for violence against minority Shiites or members of secessionist groups that routinely blow up police stations and attack government facilities in the southwestern Pakistani province of Baluchistan.

But the late-night calls put the journalists in a bind. If they don't print the messages, they could be killed. If they do print them, they could face three years in prison under Pakistan's anti-terrorism laws. It's no surprise which risk they'd rather run. At least 20 journalists have been killed in Baluchistan the past six years, their bullet-ridden bodies sometimes found stuffed into sacks.

"If you are a journalist here in Baluchistan you have a choice: Either a bullet in the head or a jail sentence," said Ashiq Butt, a stocky bureau chief with the News Network International (NNI), a Pakistani news agency that feeds its reports to newspapers.

But authorities are putting pressure from their side as well, trying to stem spiraling violence in the province.

Last month, the Baluchistan provincial government for the first time charged 21 news organizations, their owners and several journalists under the anti-terrorist law, which provides for three years in jail if convicted of carrying messages, reports or information supplied by outlawed militant groups. The charge sheet filed by the government accused the news organizations of "spreading panic."

Pakistan is one of the most dangerous places in the world to work as a journalist, according to the U.S.-based Committee to Protect Journalists. In the last six years 41 journalists have died violently in Pakistan, although 12 of those deaths are still under investigation to determine whether their deaths were linked to their jobs as journalists, according to the CPJ site.

Many of the multiple militant groups and armed factions in Pakistan ? such as Lashkar-e-Janghvi, behind many slayings of Shiites ? operate with impunity, with police too weak to take much direct action against them. So they are only emboldened to threaten journalists into being their mouthpieces.

"If I want to live in this city I have to write what they say," Butt said.

The statements can often be cruel and explicit, detailing those who have been killed, he said. Sunni militants' messages are laced with vitriolic attacks against the minority Shiite Muslims they revile as heretics.

Just last week, he was called by a member of the violent Baluchistan Liberation Army, a self-declared secessionist group fighting for an independent state for ethnic Baluchis against what they see as domination from ethnic Punjabis. The group has already claimed responsibility for the deaths of three journalists. The caller had a message and added, use it verbatim or die.

Butt did exactly that, publishing the statement, "The Punjabis have captured our lands and we will kill the Frontier Corps and Police . . . We will continue our struggle until Baluchistan is liberated from Pakistan."

Aryan Khan, another journalist in the Baluchistan capital Quetta, said Lashkar-e-Janghvi militants even dictate the language newspapers and broadcasters should use in their normal news reports whenever they report on the death of a Shiite, whether in an attack or from natural causes.

Rather than the respectful, euphemistic terms usually used by Urdu-language press for a person's death, "they say we should use the same word we use if an animal dies," he said.

In recent years Pakistan's Baluchistan province has been shattered by relentless bloodletting by the separatists and by Sunni militant killings and suicide bombings against Shiites. Human rights activists and international aid workers operating in Baluchistan have also been attacked. The international Red Cross suspended its operations in May after one of its workers was killed in Quetta.

"For us Baluchistan has become a source of great concern," said Bob Dietz, Asia Program Coordinator for the Committee to Protect Journalists. "The situation in Baluchistan looks set to continue for a long time ? the issues are deep seated and don't lend themselves to easy solutions. For media support groups, the region has emerged as a new front line."

Escalating violence is making vast parts of Baluchistan inaccessible, said Dietz.

That, he contended, seems to suit the government.

"The government seems to be quite happy that there is little or no independent monitoring of the situation," he said. He also criticized the Baluchistan provincial government for laying charges against journalists and news organizations covering both sides in the conflicts ravaging the region.

In an interview in Quetta, provincial police chief Omar Ibne Khitab justified the charges, saying the anti-terror law was clear. He also said his force does not have the equipment to trace the threatening telephone calls to journalists and locate the culprits.

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan issued a report last month criticizing the government for inaction on what? as well as national media outlets for neglecting coverage of events in Baluchistan. The report said local journalists feel threatened from all sides and neglected by the government.

"Journalists in the field felt threatened from the security forces, militants and insurgents," said the report released Aug. 30. "If they said one thing they were traitors to one side and if they did not they were traitors to the other side.

From within the HRCP's heavily guarded office, Shamsul Mulk said rights workers risked their lives investigating the killings of journalists as well as the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of scores of people, many linked to the separatist movement. Many rights workers have left the organization out of fear for their lives.

"I wouldn't be here if there wasn't a guard outside the door," he said. "People are afraid. They are not even attending our meetings anymore."

Canon?s New Full-Frame 6D: The Beginning Of The End For APS-C At $2099

canon-6dCanon unveiled a new entry in its DSLR lineup this morning, the full-frame Canon 6D which arrives sometime in December. The camera is priced at $2,099 U.S., at or slightly above where its previous generation 5D Mark II is currently sitting at most retailers, and well under the $3,500 asking price of the 5D Mark III or the $6,800 1DX. It's an attractive and affordable choice for those looking at at a 7D, which is based around much smaller APS-C sensor tech, and right on par with Nikon's latest D600 full-frame, which also retails for $2,099. The question is, with these kinds of specs in a full-frame body at these prices, is it only a matter of time before APS-C gets retired altogether? The 6D hits a lot of notes, but not all of them are the ones consumers were looking to hear. Still, it's trying to be a bridge device, and it definitely changes things up enough to wear that guise.

Robots at War: Scholars Debate the Ethical Issues ? Slaw

The dawn of the 21st century has been called the decade of the drone. Unmanned aerial vehicles, remotely operated by pilots in the United States, rain Hellfire missiles on suspected insurgents in South Asia and the Middle East.

Now a small group of scholars is grappling with what some believe could be the next generation of weaponry: lethal autonomous robots. ?

Fla. ex-Gov. Jeb Bush working on immigration book

NEW YORK (AP) ? Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush is a working on a book about one of the Republican Party's most contentious issues: immigration.

Bush has a deal with Threshold Editions, a conservative imprint of Simon & Schuster, for "Immigration Wars: Forging An American Solution." Threshold announced Wednesday that the book is scheduled for next spring and will be co-authored by conservative attorney and activist Clint Bolick. Financial terms were not disclosed.

"Drawing upon history and American ideals, Jeb Bush and Clint Bolick outline a courageous and comprehensive strategy to bridge the partisan divide and set our nation's immigration policy on a just and rational course," Threshold said in a statement. "The book will present a comprehensive solution based on two core principles: Immigration is vital to America's future, fueling its growth, vibrancy and creativity; yet any true and enduring solution must adhere to the rule of the law."

The 59-year-old ex-governor has been urging his fellow Republicans to take on a more moderate tone on immigration, saying hard-line policies have led to lost elections. Bush himself was elected twice in a state with a substantial Hispanic population.

Books have become a standard way to advance a national candidacy and Bush, the son and brother of former presidents, has been widely discussed as a 2016 GOP contender should President Obama be re-elected. But he has disputed having such ambition, saying his goal was to help the 2012 Republican candidate, Mitt Romney.

Bush also helped write a book that came out in the mid-1990s, "Profiles in Character," published by his own Foundation for Florida's Future.

High-resolution image of Berlin at night facilitates light pollution research

ScienceDaily (Sep. 10, 2012) ? Researchers from Berlin have published an 878 megapixel aerial mosaic image of Berlin at night. With one pixel per square meter, the resulting map is the highest resolution image ever published of a city at night. The ecologists from the Leibniz Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries and physicists from Freie Universit?t Berlin used the image to measure how much light comes from different types of land use areas, such as streets or parks. Their findings were recently published in the journal Remote Sensing of Environment.

The scientists are studying light pollution, the modification of natural light levels in the nocturnal environment due to artificial light from cities.. Their goals are to understand both what the sources of upwards directed light are, and to identify patterns in the distribution of the lights. To do this, they stitched together a total of 2647 aerial photographs taken from the research aircraft of Freie Universit?t Berlin's Institute for Space Sciences. The photos were taken in a series of 14 tracks at 3 km above the city in September of 2010.

A total of 42 percent of Berlin's area, including all of the city's central neighborhoods, was analyzed by comparing the light emitted from each point to land use information about the city. The scientists found that more than one third of the upward directed light came from streets, which are lit by streetlights, auto headlights, and advertisements. The city's sources of light were found to be unevenly distributed, with half of the total light coming from only one quarter of its area. Part of the reason for this is that Berlin still contains large unlit areas such as the Havel River, Grunewald, and Tempelhofer Park. The researchers noted that these areas are important dark resources for nocturnal animals. In total, the researchers found that such natural areas accounted for almost one third of the study area, but emitted only 6 percent of the total light.

The research was funded by two interdisciplinary projects, MILIEU (Freie Universit?t Berlin) and "Verlust der Nacht," a joint project of Leibniz Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries and Freie Universit?t Berlin. "Verlust der Nacht" is funded by the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the Senate Department for Economics, Technology, and Research.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004): Defence Against the Dark Arts

The clip Defence against the dark arts from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004) with Rupert Grint, David Thewlis Intriguing, isn't it? Would anyone like to venture a guess as to what is inside? That's a boggart, that is. Very good, Mr. Thomas. Now, can anybody tell me what a boggart looks like? No one knows. When did she get here? Boggarts are shape-shifters. They take the shape of whatever a person fears the most. That's what makes them so... So terrifying, yes, yes, yes... Luckily, a very simple charm exists to repel a boggart. Let's practice it now. Without wands, please. After me. Riddikulus! Riddikulus! Very good. A little louder and very clear. Riddikulus! Riddikulus! This class is ridiculous. Very good. So much for the easy part. You see, the incantation alone is not enough. What really finishes a boggart is laughter. You need to force it to assume a shape you find truly amusing. Let me explain. Neville, would you join me, please? Come on, don't be shy. Come on. Come on. Hello. Neville, what frightens you most of all? Professor Snape. Sorry? Professor Snape. Professor Snape. Yes, frightens all. You live with your grandmother. I don't want it to turn into her, either. No it won't. I want you to picture her clothes.

Being John Malkovich (1999): Malkovich As a Puppeteer

Being John Malkovich (1999): Malkovich As a Puppeteer

The clip Malkovich as a puppeteer from Being John Malkovich (1999) with John Malkovich Honey? Maxine? Maxine? I'm busy. Maxine, honey, it's on! Yeah, there's the truth, and there are lies and, art always tells the truth, even when it's lying. The enigmatic John Malkovich one of the world's greatest entertainers and the man who reinvented how we view puppeteering. Tonight we look at the man above the strings and the woman behind the man. Raised in Evanston, Illinois, Malkovich had a lifelong interest in theatre arts and as a young man, was one of the founding members of Chicago's world-renowned Steppenwolf Theatre Company. From there, it was a simple transition to Broadway accolades and Hollywood stardom. But nothing could prepare the public for what was to come next. And so it was, that just eight short months ago John Malkovich dropped the bombshell that sent shock waves through the entertainment community. Turning his back on his former profession, Malkovich had to start from scratch and pay his dues all over again as a fledgling puppeteer. Hello, ladies and gentlemen, I'm John Malkovich. I'm really John Malkovich. From these inauspicious beginnings John Malkovich's rise to stardom was fast and furious. His breakout performance was at this year's Emmy Awards... It's really good! I look really amazing. I'd fuck me. If there's anything that upsets me about it it's feeling like if I move into it too quickly l'll be, you know, deemed an imitator. But, I think that once we all get the courage to follow through on our instincts, like Malkovich has I think that a lot of us will move into puppetry.

    Accepted (2006): Ask The Students

    Accepted (2006): Ask The Students

The clip Ask The Students from Accepted (2006) with Justin Long, Lewis Black I'm... I'm just saying, I mean, is that what college is? What were you expecting? A renaissance of the human spirit? American education is in the shitter. You know why? Because people forget the most important rule. College is a service industry. A service industry? As in "serve us," as opposed to the other way around. Look, you see all these kids out here? They all paid to come here. Right. They all paid for an experience. What kind of experience? The hell if I know. I'm not a goddamn mind reader. Well, maybe I should just ask them. Welcome to the conversation. What do I want to learn? Why are you asking me? Well, I'm asking you, Glen, because I have a hunch that no one's ever really asked you that before. Yeah? Well, I like pancakes and alfalfa sprouts and lemonade. Okay, you know what, let's appropriate the bulk of this man's tuition to learning more about the culinary arts. Huh? Food. All right. All right. Rory. What about you? Ever since nursery school, every single waking moment of every single day has been scheduled. So what do I want to do? Nothing. Cheap, zen, beautiful. I like it. Hands, what about you? Summer camp I made a paperweight and won Camp Nagachewy's coveted woodcarving award and next day, ran a 4.6 forty and it's been football ever since. Mmm. Woodcarving, sculpting. Good, something with your hands. Well, there may be something in there. You can think about that, and then get back to me. All right? Schrader, what about you? Well, B, I'm glad you asked, actually. 'Cause since we're going to prison, I'm gonna learn how to carve a shank out of my toothbrush. Okay, ha-ha. I'll tell you something, though. All our lives we've been told what to learn. Well, today the tide is gonna turn, my friend. Because today we're gonna ask the customer. What do I want to learn? What do I want to learn?

Hamlet 2 (2008): Octavio Trys to Quit

Hamlet 2 (2008): Octavio Trys to Quit

The clip octavio trys to quit from Hamlet 2 (2008) with Steve Coogan I want you to meet a friend of mine. He got stuck inside my time machine. His name is Jesus Christ. Oh, yeah. We heard you were coming back. Jesus has a rocking swimmer's bod. Okay, can I ask you a question? Sure. What's really going on here? Is Jesus, like, a swimmer? Jesus is very lean... Can we please wait until lunch to do that? Thank you. Where was I? Jesus has a swimmer's body. Jesus has a swimmer's body, and while he's one of the more spiritual people on Earth, he's also very attractive to you. He's attractive to me? Jesus is sexy to you. Which leads us on to the musical interlude, Rock Me, Sexy Jesus. Okay, you are 40-something minutes late. I can't do the play. What? My dad's making me quit the play. That's impossible. You're the lead. He said, "No way." Goddamn macho bastards and their fear of the arts. They just don't get it! Okay, we're fighting this. Even if we have to take on the whole ghetto. No, wait. What do you mean? We're going to your house. Now. No, no, no, we can't do that. It's not a good idea. My father tried to stand in the way of my dreams, too. He's dead now, but you could say, like Hamlet's ghost, I'm still haunted by him. Because he caused me so much pain, which is why I tried to become an actor, which caused me so much pain.
