Apple announcing iPhone 5S, perhaps iPhone 5C, on September 10

Apple

Apple will reportedly be announcing their next generation iPhone - what most people are calling iPhone 5S for convenience sake - at a special event on Tuesday, September 10, 2013, and possibly the less expensive iPhone - rumored to be called iPhone 5C - along with it. This according to Ina Fried of AllThingsD:

Apple is expected to unveil its next iPhone at a special event on Sept. 10, sources told AllThingsD.

That sounds exactly right.

Last year's iPhone 5 was announced on Wednesday, September 12, 2012 and shipped on Friday, September 21, 2012. The previous year's iPhone 4S was announced on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 and shipped on Friday, October 14. So, if Apple holds to the same pattern as the last two years, and launches the second Friday following the announcement, that'd put the release on Friday, September 20.

That also means, again based on previous patterns, we might just see the iOS 7 Gold Master on September 10 as well, as Apple typically announces final developer builds at the event, with the general release on on around Wednesday, September 18, to give some breathing room before the new product lands.

No word on new iPads or iPad minis for this event, but given last year they shared the stage with new Macs in October, that's not a surprise. Last year's iPhone event did include new iPods, however, so we'll have to see on those.

For iPhone, everything is set. Just under 6 weeks and counting. Anyone getting excited yet?

Hillary Clinton to hold fundraiser for McAuliffe

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Hillary Rodham Clinton plans to headline her first political event since leaving the State Department, raising money for Virginia gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe.

Two Democratic officials familiar with the plans say Clinton will hold a small fundraising reception at her Washington, D.C., home on Sept. 30. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the event.

McAuliffe is a longtime Clinton friend and former Democratic National Committee chairman. He faces Republican state Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli in the fall election.

Clinton has avoided political gatherings since departing as President Barack Obama's secretary of state this year.

She is considered the Democrats' leading contender for the White House in 2016 but has not announced her intentions.

The fundraiser was first reported by Politico.

Not Guilty, but Not Innocent Either

BBC's Broadchurch. BBC's Broadchurch

Broadchurch, an eight-episode series that begins this Wednesday night on BBC America, is the only show about the murder of a child that I have ever found spiritually salubrious. It?s not just that Broadchurch demonstrates that it is possible to reinvigorate something as tired as the hunt-for-a-killer genre with solid, engaging craftsmanship?though it does?but that unlike so many in the genre it is inordinately emotionally generous. Despite its wrenching premise, Broadchurch?s view of human nature is not that it?s fundamentally malignant. That?s not to say there is no bad guy?there is, and the reveal is a gut punch?but that the show takes its underlying precept,?that everybody is unknowable,?and plays it all the way out, honestly: We don?t know what lies in the hearts of men, but it can?t all be evil.

The coastal English town of Broadchurch is a small, close-knit community where a man can walk the streets in the morning and say hello to nearly everyone he passes. As the show begins, 11-year-old Danny Latimer has just gone missing. He regularly leaves the house before his 16-year-old sister and young parents (Andrew Buchan and the great, anguished Jodie Whittaker) to do a paper route, so his mother doesn?t realize his absence until midday. Just as she has begun to panic she hears that a body has been found on the beach. It?s Danny.

Tasked with solving a very rare violent crime in this part of England is DI Alec Hardy (David Tennant, Doctor Who before the current Doctor Who), a brusque, stubbled detective, new to town and hiding a serious health condition, and DS Ellie Miller (Olivia Colman), a long-time resident, just back from maternity leave.* Hardy has previously botched a high-profile prosecution of another child murderer by losing evidence, and seems to have fled to Broadchurch in hopes of escaping the guilt and ignominy of that case. As he walks to the body on the beach, he mutters to himself, ?Please, not again,? a moment of fear and anxiety he does not share with his new colleagues, to whom he is blunt and persnickety.

Ellie, as she prefers to be called?though Hardy refuses to?had been promised Hardy?s job, but upon her return learns she has lost it. She finds her new boss?s bad manners and know-it-all attitude irritating, and regularly tells him so. She is feisty and loveable. (When she tells a group of reporters she will cut off their balls if they don?t leave the family alone, Danny?s sister tells Ellie?s son, ?Your mum is awesome.? He says, ?I know,? and so do we.) But she?s also relatively na?ve. It?s hard for her to believe anyone in her small town is capable of the crime. She knows everyone, he knows no one, he suspects everyone, she has a hard time suspecting anyone, but there is still a reason he?s the boss. Life is not fair: An 11-year-old boy dies and, unfortunately, the person with an optimistic outlook on human behavior does not know more about heinous crimes than the jaded veteran.

Broadchurch, past its opening incident, is not a violent show. It?s not even, particularly, a menacing show. Finding the murderer does not involve many tense, breathless scenes in which the detectives find themselves in close proximity to danger. Rather, it unfolds in the slow-burn manner of highbrow mysteries these days, like Top of the Lake or The Killing: Grieving and sleuthing are given equal weight. Initially the show seems to be making the banal point that the residents of this bucolic town are not what they appear at first glance. But they are not what they appear at second glance either. Over the course of the investigation, various suspects?and not just suspects, but a man who may or may not be a psychic, a caustic news reporter, even DI Hardy?are closely examined and found to be troubled and traumatized, their closets filled with skeletons, shady and suspicious but doing the best they can. If people are capable of anything, then they are capable of everything: not just murder, but regeneration, stupidity, grief, remorse, sadness, love. You don?t have to be entirely innocent not to be guilty.

All of this empathy lulls you. By the time the murderer is revealed, it hurts, and badly. And even then, Broadchurch does not chalk it up to anything as comforting as evil: The murderer is not as vile as it would be soothing for a murderer to be. And that only makes it worse: This horrible crime might not have been committed, but it was, forever saddling characters who don?t deserve it with exactly the sort of traumatic past that haunts so many of Broadchurch?s troubled residents. Violent crimes live on and on. Broadchurch is more compassionate to its survivors than any crime show I?ve seen.

Correction, Aug. 7, 2013: This review originally misstated Alec Hardy's rank. He is a detective inspector, not a detective sergeant. (Return to the corrected sentence.)

UsedEverywhere in the community

Long before she became the marketing director for UsedEverywhere.com, Lacey Sheardown was a borderline-obsessive user of the classifieds site.

?I was always on there ? I was an avid user,? she says with a laugh. Her Victoria home is filled with furniture and other unique items she bought or found for free on UsedEverywhere. ?So when I got this job, my friends were like, ?Yeah, that makes sense.??

But what drew Sheardown to the site was more than the satisfaction of treasure hunting. Unlike other classifieds sites out there, this was a place where she could look for a new coffee table without stumbling across an ad for a casual NSA encounter at the local park.

?We?re actually family friendly,? she says. Across more than 80 cities and towns, the site has a real, live monitoring team, checking ads every hour of the day, ensuring quality content and dependable transactions. ?Your kid can surf our site and you can be comfortable with it.?

UsedEverywhere.com is now owned by Black Press. It has as many unique visitors in Canada as Craig?s List and is the number one free classified site in Ottawa, Victoria and PEI. The site includes an informative blog and Facebook page.

As much as the site is about buying and selling, it?s also about connecting people, building community, on and off-line, with a flesh-and-blood UsedEverywhere community coordinator working locally.

Following the flooding in Alberta, the site encouraged Albertans to donate items for flood victims on its four sites in the province: UsedCalgary.com, UsedRedDeer.com, UsedCentralAlberta.com and UsedEdmonton.com.

In Vancouver, you might find the community coordinator at the farmer?s markets or most recently at the Vancouver Children?s Festival where UsedEverywhere was a major sponsor. They are also involved with projects such as a car and booster seat recycling program that took place last month (they recycled 83 expired seats) as well as a new initiative in the next month to work with local business, allowing them to advertise on the site and connect with buyers.

Their community coordinators even look for personal opportunities to help locally through the Angels program. Last year, for instance, they helped a Vancouver woman undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer by finding breast milk for her baby.

Sheardown says community involvement is a big component of the company?s DNA.

?It?s a social responsibility,? she says. ?Our site is about reusing, reducing and recycling and so being a part of the community and helping in other ways is connected that.?

Even though the site has been embraced mostly by professional mothers like Sheardown, she says it appeals to other demographics as well.

?My husband is on his site, on his phone, hitting refresh every 10 minutes,? she says laughing. ?We think he has a bit of a problem.?

So what?s the coolest thing she got on UsedEverywhere?

It?s a large stereo cabinet that was brought over from Europe after the Second World War.

?They had the clothes on their backs, 20 bucks and this giant, enormous stereo cabinet. And we got it for free!?

It?s the bonus of hearing a story or meeting new people that Sheardown appreciates about using the site.

?There?s always history with the item or you meet an interesting person,? she says. ?Hearing those stories is great.?

The second generation of LGBTQ parenting | QNotes Gay Charlotte ...

In the last two days, I?ve received phone calls from three different casting agents who are ?looking for LGBT parents with a unique parenting style. We are starting a new reality-show cable series. Are you a spoiler? An authoritarian? Permissive? Free range? Unschooler? Or, have a style that is all your own? We?re looking for moms and dads with unique perspectives on parenting for a new series on a top-rated national cable network? (read ?Bravo,? ?TLC,? and ?MTV?). They contacted me because of my writings on gay parenting and LGBTQ advocacy, both through my blogs and this column in qnotes. Initially, the inquirer wants to know the age of my children (both are over 20 years old) and whether or not the children are living at home. Because both children are now young adults and are no longer living at home, the inquirer then wants to know if I know any unique lesbian or gay couple who are parenting children under the age of 18 years old and living at home. I take down their phone number and email addresses politely, but that?s where it usually stops. All the lesbian and gay couples I know are not willing to place their families under the constant glare of klieg lights for a reality show that produces an Andy Warhol-type ?15 minutes of fame? motif that may leave the family destroyed after the fame is over and the darker side of the family exposed for the world to witness.

gayfamily_sfWhy all the interest in our families? We are the new ?rave? item in terms of modern society?s attention. With all the focus on marriage equality in the context of the states here and the world around us, the next logical line of inquiry after we get married is the one which is true for opposite sex couples as well: When are you going to have a baby? With surrogacy, in vitro fertilization, home remedies and adoption as the primary means of bringing children into our LGBTQ lives, having a baby as an LGBTQ individual?s or couple?s life is not far-fetched. Instead, my hunch is that it will soon become the norm ? dating, engaged, married, then we welcome children into our lives (though not necessarily in that order, so create your own sequence of events).

As I write this column, I smile at this sudden rush of attention on our families and the safety of identifying our families as ?unique.? When I told my immediate and extended family members that I was gay 18 years ago, my daughter was seven and my son was three. It was news not to be shared widely, but only shared among those whom I loved. It was news to be kept within and among a small cadre of people I trusted. Around me, there were no television shows with gay dads on any of the main channels, just the fabulous life of ?Queer Eye for the Straight Guy? and ?Queer as Folk? on cable channels. There was no ?Modern Family? or the now defunct ?The New Normal,? with storylines involving gay dads who only kiss and never have sex. There was an episode on ?Will and Grace? in which the characters of Jack and Will took care of one of their gay friends? children, showing how inept gay men were supposed to be at raising children (even the children?s gay dads on ?Will and Grace? were constantly bickering). No one was calling me with a possibility of being on a reality television show. Our kind of family was to be ?seen and not heard? from. We were the first generation of out LGBTQ parents.

Times change. Attitudes are changing. The second generation of LGBTQ parents is now the focus of society?s attention. They are the new darlings of the media?s attention. It is wonderful to see that who?s was once ?new? and a ?threat? to society?s ?ideal? of being family is slowly becoming part of the American mainstream way of being family. : :

Netflix starts rolling out profiles to iOS, Apple TV, other platforms

    ?

PS3, Xbox 360 following in near future

Netflix has begun wider deployment of the multi-user profiles that started hitting the Apple TV earlier this week. On top of the Apple TV, the feature is now rolling out to iPhone, iPod, and iPad users "over the next few days," according to Netflix. In the near future, the company is also planning to bring profiles to the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and newer-model connected TVs and Blu-ray players. Android and Wii users are only expected to get the option "soon."

The profiles let Netflix subscribers identify up to five separate users per account. Each profile gets its own recommendation, Instant Queue, and Recently Watched lists, preventing one person's viewing habits from impacting others. Kids, for example, can have profiles separate from their parents.

Profiles can also be linked to separate Facebook accounts. If Facebook sharing is turned on, a person will get recommendations based on their own social circles.

Economy added 200,000 jobs in July

Goods-producing industries added 22,000 jobs in July, according to ?a new report, and construction payrolls also rose by 22,000 while manufacturing payrolls declined by 5,000.?

Private-sector employment increased by 200,000 jobs from June to July, according to the ADP National Employment Report.

Goods-producing industries added 22,000 jobs in July, according to the report, and construction payrolls also rose by 22,000 while manufacturing payrolls declined by 5,000.

Service-providing industries added 177,000 jobs in July, the largest gain since last November, according to a news release issued by ADP. Gains were broad-based across industries, with professional/business services adding 49,000 jobs over the month. Trade/transportation/utilities services contributed 45,000 jobs, while financial activities gained 4,000 jobs.

June's job gain was revised upward from 188,000 to 198,000.

"The U.S. private sector added a total of 200,000 jobs during the month of July, with businesses of all sizes contributing to the overall gain and small businesses generating the greatest share, just as they did in the previous month," said Carlos Rodriguez, president and chief executive officer of ADP in a statement. "Among industries tracked by the ADP National Employment Report, professional/business services showed the largest increase in July with the addition of 49,000 jobs, while construction added 22,000 jobs, a stronger gain than in June."

Mark Zandi, chief economist of Moody's Analytics, which works on the report with ADP, said, "Job growth remains remarkably stable. Businesses are adding to payrolls in most industries and across all company sizes. The job market has admirably weathered the fiscal headwinds, tax increases and government spending cuts. This bodes well for the next year when those headwinds are set to fade."

ADP, which provides management services, derives the report from its payroll data and measures the change in total nonfarm private employment each month on a seasonally-adjusted basis.

Shadowgun: Deadzone arrives on PC and Facebook

Madfinger Games, developers of popular mobile games such as Shadowgun and Dead Trigger, have released a PC port of their Shadowgun: Deadzone game, as well as a Facebook version.

The PC works like any other Windows game. You download the installer, run it, create an account or log into an existing one and you are ready to play the game, except this time on a large high resolution monitor with a keyboard and mouse. The latter especially makes a big difference and makes shooting down enemies a lot easier. It also gives you almost an unfair advantage over other players, most of whom are playing on iOS and Android devices.

The visuals of the game look good on smartphones but not that great on a PC, even at 1080p resolution. The textures look a bit bland and the anti-aliasing is not that great. The menus icons especially look extremely low res and probably picked from the smartphone version.

There is a Facebook version as well that plays within your browser, provided one you have that supports 3D gaming with GPU acceleration.

The addition of PC and Facebook support opens it up to a lot more players, which is what a multiplayer game really needs. Deadzone is a reasonably fun game and since it is free as well it?s well worth a try. You can easily sink several minutes into it without having spent a single dime on it. A Mac version of the game is expected to arrive shortly on the Mac App Store.
